Have you ever wondered how to type the degree symbol on Mac? Have you ever googled the degree symbol then copied and pasted it? Your not the only one! Typing the degrees symbol on a Mac was a mystery for me for quite a while.
There are four different ways to type the degree symbols on Mac. Follow along to find out what one is the fastest!
How to Type the Degree Symbol on Mac using the Special Characters Menu
You can insert a degree symbol using the Emoji & Symbols menu, which is now called Special Characters in more recent macOS versions.
To insert the degree symbol in your document, position the cursor where you’d like it to appear and then go to Edit > Special Characters (or Edit Emoji & Symbols) from the Menu Bar. Alternatively, use Control-Command-Space on your Mac keyboard for faster access!
A new window will appear with a variety of special characters, symbols, and Emojis. Instead of manually scrolling through all the available options to find what you need, type in “degree” into the search bar.
As seen in the screenshot above, you choose three different degree symbol options: one for degrees Fahrenheit and Celsius and a degree symbol. Double-click the desired degree symbol to insert it at the current location of the cursor. This method is slower than using the following Keyboard shortcuts, but none the less it does work.
How to Add the Degree Symbol on Mac using Magic Keyboard Emoji Key
Apple released the new Magic Keyboard this year with the introduction of the new 24-inch iMac M1. The new keyboard features the emoji key which is very helpful. Below are the steps in insert the degree symbol on Mac using the new Magic Keyboard
You can insert a degree symbol using the Emoji & Symbols Key on the new Magic Keyboard. The emoji key is located a the bottom left side of the keyboard. To insert the degree symbol with the new keyboard, press the emoji key, bringing up the same menu as mentioned above. Choose the desired degree symbol, but ensure the cursor is at the location you want to insert the degree symbol.
How to Insert the Degree Symbol on Mac using Keyboard Shortcut
The quickest way to type the degree symbol on Mac is using the keyboard shortcut. Put the cursor exactly after the number that you want to represent a degree. After that, press any of the following keyboard shortcuts to insert the degree symbol:
- Shift + Option + 8: °
- Option + K ˚
- Option + 0: º
The degree symbol is a versatile punctuation mark that can be used in all sorts of circumstances. If you don’t know what type to use, here are some tips on how they differ!
Here’s a short description of all three variants.
- Shift + Option + 8: degree temperature sign. (i.e., 74°)
- Option + K: Ring above a diacritic.
- Option + 0: Masculine Ordinal Indicator, often used in written languages.
Now, typing the degree symbol on your Mac is easy! Just confirm you’re using the correct character type and use a keyboard shortcut accordingly. Otherwise, utilizing an emoji keyboard will produce what you need in no time at all.
