How to Share WIFI password from iPhone to Mac | 2023
How to Share WIFI password from iPhone to Mac
Using the shared Wi-Fi password function will make joining a Wi-Fi network much simpler for Mac users trying to connect to a friend’s, a family member’s, or a business wireless network.
This is helpful for various reasons, including speeding up connecting to a Wi-Fi network. It also makes it possible to obtain a Wi-Fi password without asking for it or reciting it aloud, which is essential for complex passwords or security-related scenarios.
The device from which you seek the Wi-Fi password must be connected to the same wireless network as the Mac attempting to join it to use this feature.
Using an iPhone, Mac, or iPad to Get a Shared Wi-Fi Password on a Mac
1. Pull down the WIFI menu on the Mac, then choose the desired network as you would normally.
2. Pause the connect network page where a Wi-Fi password is required to be entered.
3. Wait until you see the “Wi-Fi Password” request page asking whether you want to share the Wi-Fi password, then select “Share Password” from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac close by and connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
4. The Mac will instantly join the Wi-Fi network
Without ever needing to enter the password, the Mac will immediately connect to the wireless network.
This feature may not be as obvious for simple Wi-Fi passwords, but since many wireless networks utilize complex passwords, it can be very useful and prevent mistakes and other irritations.
The option to share the Wi-Fi password from an iPhone or iPad has been available for some time now in iOS and iPadOS, and it also became available on the Mac with more recent versions of macOS, which in this case means anything running High Sierra or later.
This works with any encrypted Wi-Fi network, but it won’t work with one that requires users to connect through a captive portal because those networks don’t employ the same encryption technology as other networks do to protect the network and password (typically, Wi-Fi networks with captive portals do not use encryption at all and are entirely public minus the initial login stage).
While the focus of this article is on receiving a shared Wi-Fi password from a Mac using an iPhone, Mac, or iPad, the capability also works in the opposite direction, allowing you to share a password with another Mac, iPhone, or iPad that is attempting to connect to the same Wi-Fi network.
Still not working? Check out the Apple Support page or try the following steps.
- Try again after restarting both devices if you still don’t see the setup animation.
- If you cannot provide your Wi-Fi password, have the other person type it.
